Young individuals passionate about pursuing a career in agri-food production are encouraged to participate in a unique competition focused on skills. The competition, named ‘The ABP Angus Youth Challenge,’ is being introduced by ABP in collaboration with the Northern Irish Angus Producer Group. It targets groups of teenagers aged 14-16 who have a keen interest in agriculture or agri-food production. After the initial phase of video entries and interviews for shortlisting, three teams will be selected as finalists and each will receive five Aberdeen Angus calves at the upcoming Balmoral Show. These teams will then raise their calves until they are ready for sale, keeping all the net profits from the sale to ABP. Additionally, a cash prize of £1,000 will be awarded to the top-performing team. All finalist teams will benefit from an 18-month program offering skills development and insights into the meat production supply chain, from farm to retail. George Mullan, the Managing Director of ABP NI, shared the motivation behind this initiative, emphasizing the importance of nurturing the right talent with the appropriate skills and mindset for the future success of the local agri-food industry. He highlighted that the competition is designed to engage young people at a pivotal point in their educational journey, where they are considering their future career paths. Importantly, participants do not need to have a farming background to enter. The competition seeks young individuals with a strong interest in agriculture or agri-food production, including those studying relevant subjects like the CCEA GCSE in Agriculture and Land Use. The competition is open to teams of 2-5 members in Years 11 & 12, or those aged 14-16, representing schools, clubs, societies, or simply a group of friends with a shared ambition and the ability to impress the judges. The selection process involves creating a short video and participating in an interview to showcase their understanding of ABP, the Aberdeen Angus breed, and their passion for agriculture and food production. This initiative builds upon the success of the previous ‘Farmers of the Future’ competition and a similar contest in the Republic of Ireland, demonstrating ABP’s commitment to fostering the next generation of agri-food industry leaders. The deadline for video submissions to the ABP Angus Youth Challenge is set for 22nd December 2017\.
