Eight schools are in the frame for awards at this year’s ABP Angus Youth Challenge finale on 28th October at the Logan Hall, Balmoral Park. Four summer and four winter teams making up the Class of 2021 are completing the Challenge. Cookstown High School; Dalriada School Ballymoney; Friends’ School Lisburn, and St Kevin’s Lisnaskea have been competing against each other for the past 18 months. Whilst teams from Banbridge Academy, Cookstown High School, Newtownhamilton High School; St. Catherine’s College Armagh are also in the running for a winners’ trophy and a cheque for £1,000 for their school. As finalists, all teams have been rearing a mini-herd of Angus cross calves during the past twelve months which were awarded to them by ABP and Certified Irish Angus. They will shortly sell their finished cattle to ABP and be able to pocket the proceeds. In addition to the hands-on farming experience, they have also been working on projects related to sustainable beef from farm to fork from exploring the characteristics of beef farming in the future and the role of bovine genetics can play in improving sustainability to the trends in beef consumption amongst teenagers and young people. The winners will be determined by their achievements over past year and how they perform at a final interview with senior representatives from CAFRE, ABP and Certified Irish Angus. Ahead of their final interviews, communication and interview skills training has been provided by Business in the Community’s LifeSkills team to help them prepare. Meanwhile 25 new teams will be exhibiting on the 28th for a place on the 2023 ABP Angus Youth Challenge. Speaking ahead of the awards ceremony and exhibition, George Mullan, Managing Director of ABP in Northern Ireland said, “we’re looking forward to showcasing the fantastic work of our finalists and recognising the best as award winners. I am sure they will be a great inspiration to the 83 new pupils present on 28th October, who are all hoping for a place in our next finalist programme.
