# Dr. Darian McBain of Thai Union Awarded as an SDG Pioneer for Sustainable Ocean Economy by the UN Global Compact

BANGKOK – On June 17, 2021, Dr. Darian McBain, who serves as the Group Director of Sustainability for Thai Union Group PCL, was honored as one of the 10 SDG Pioneers by the United Nations Global Compact. The SDG Pioneers are distinguished business leaders whom the UN Global Compact acknowledges for their outstanding efforts in promoting the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) by adhering to the UN Global Compact's Ten Principles concerning human rights, the environment, labor, and anti-corruption. Dr. McBain expressed her deep gratitude for the award, highlighting her pride in standing with other SDG Pioneers dedicated to enhancing sustainability in business and the broader world. She credited the global teams at Thai Union for their shared commitment to sustainability and their role in striving for a more sustainable seafood industry worldwide. This accolade was awarded to Dr. McBain in recognition of her significant contributions towards promoting the UN Sustainable Development Goals, especially her efforts to foster a sustainable ocean economy. Since joining the UN Global Compact in 2013, Thai Union has been proactive in addressing all SDGs, with a particular focus on SDG 2 – Zero Hunger, SDG 8 – Decent Work and Economic Growth, SDG 13 – Climate Action, and SDG 14 – Life Below Water. The selection of the 2021 SDG Pioneers was based on an evaluation by a panel of experts, including former SDG Pioneers and representatives from the UN Global Compact Expert Network, academia, and UN agencies. Criteria for selection included the integration of the UN Global Compact's Ten Principles into their business strategies, efforts to advance the SDGs, and active participation in the UN Global Compact and its Local Networks. The announcement of the 2021 SDG Pioneers took place during the UN Global Compact Leaders Summit 2021 on June 16\.
