On August 19, 2014, in Randers, it was announced that the Danish Crown group, a major meat exporter to over 130 countries, has begun exporting fresh pork meat to Nepal, a mountainous state in the Himalayas. This was made possible by Sanu Khadgi, a frugal meat wholesaler, who has ensured that residents of Kathmandu, the capital of Nepal, now have access to Danish pork meat from Danish Crown. In July, the first 20-foot container filled with pork loins with bones, hams, bellies, and spare ribs arrived in Kathmandu. Peter Frederiksen, the export manager at Danish Crown, expressed his excitement about this new venture and is eager to see how their products are received by Nepalese consumers. The path to this new market was paved by a visit to Denmark by Sanu Khadgi, who expressed interest in importing Danish pork meat to Nepal. He contacted ESS-FOOD, a subsidiary of Danish Crowns, in March. Lars Bo Hansen, Area Export Manager at ESS-FOOD, noted that Khadgi's company in Kathmandu already had a good understanding of Denmark, which led to his decision to visit Danish Crown slaughterhouses and assess the product quality firsthand. Transporting the meat to Nepal presented a challenge, as the country has no ports. The container with Danish pork meat was sent to Calcutta, India, and from there it was transported by lorry, which can only carry 20-foot containers due to the mountainous route conditions. The round trip from Calcutta to Kathmandu takes two weeks. Frederiksen noted that while the initial quantities are relatively small, there is potential for growth in the future. He stated that they are ready for when the first container's contents have been sold in Nepalese shops. Nepal, located between India and China, has a population of around 33 million people. Danish Crown is the world's largest pork meat exporter. Last financial year, the total export of group products amounted to DKK 26.3 billion, accounting for approximately 39% of total Danish agricultural export and 4.3% of Danish goods export.
