Danish Crown, an international food corporation, has declared a significant investment in a new processing plant in Rochdale, Greater Manchester. The aim is to supply UK consumers with high-quality, traceable pork products that are produced sustainably and to ensure a steady supply of bacon for the UK market. The company plans to invest over £100 million in the new 30,500 sq. m processing plant. The facility will employ advanced automated production machinery and cutting-edge processing technology to slice and pack bacon and gammon, adhering to UK welfare and food safety standards. The plant is expected to start production in the latter half of 2023, creating approximately 300 specialized jobs. Once fully operational, it will produce over 900 tonnes of bacon and gammon weekly. The new facility will be entirely powered by renewable energy and constructed to the highest environmental standards. This aligns with Danish Crown's broader goal of achieving carbon-neutral meat production by 2050\. The plant will utilize heat recovery from its utility systems to warm the office space and supply hot water. Ammonia will be used as a refrigerant to lessen environmental impact. Food waste will be minimized by using bacon offcuts in other products like sausages, and a circular packaging system will reduce packaging waste. In line with its commitment to sustainability and transparency, Danish Crown will provide customers with the carbon footprint of their products from production to consumption. The company has started revealing its emissions footprint across its entire supply chain in its Sustainability Report. Jais Valeur, CEO of Danish Crown, stated that the company has a long history in the UK, supplying high-quality bacon and pork products for over 135 years. This investment is the next step in their commitment to the UK market, offering customers a dependable, transparent supply of high-quality bacon that meets demand and is produced sustainably. He added that the future of meat will be based on high-quality products that are as sustainable as possible, a vision shared by many of their UK customers. With this new factory, they look forward to collaborating more closely with them towards a more sustainable future for food production. Danish Crown has been exporting to the UK since 1887, and the country remains one of the company's most crucial export markets. This new investment will establish Danish Crown's first production facility in the UK in three years, following the sale of its Tulip subsidiary to Pilgrim's in 2019.
