Randers, December 12, 2012 The initiative's objective is to ensure the supply for the company's operations in Denmark, thereby preserving Danish jobs. The task of raising pigs for slaughter is more challenging for Danish farmers compared to their counterparts in neighboring countries due to the considerably more stringent political requirements on production in Denmark. This has led to a decrease in pig production for slaughter in recent years, with farmers showing minimal interest in investing in new pig housing units or refurbishing old ones. The reduction in pig production for slaughter in Denmark translates to job losses and decreased income for the cooperative members and the Danish society as a whole. As a result, the Danish Crown's Board of Directors has decided to stimulate pig production for slaughter by providing subsidies for the construction of new pig housing units and the transformation of old sow stalls. Erik Bredholt, Chairman of Danish Crown, states that politicians are becoming increasingly aware of the significant contribution of pig production for slaughter to the Danish economy. If the company can assist in enhancing this situation and reversing a declining trend, it is clearly beneficial to do so. Danish Crown aims to boost total production by 10,000 pigs per week or an additional 520,000 pigs for slaughter annually. Bredholt adds that ultimately, it is the politicians who will determine whether Denmark should increase pig production and whether the necessary conditions should be established. However, this sends a message to the cooperative members that they can anticipate more as co-owners of Danish Crown. Details The plan offers financial support for two types of initiatives: for entirely new buildings and for transforming sow stalls. New Buildings The subsidy is provided for the construction of new pig housing units for slaughter. The subsidy will be given for a maximum of 8,000 pigs produced for slaughter per facility and per cooperative member. The subsidy will be disbursed at DKK 0.15/kg over a 5-year period. The subsidy program for new buildings can accommodate production facilities equivalent to a maximum of 260,000 pigs produced for slaughter annually. The subsidies will be awarded to cooperative members on a first-come, first-served basis. Conversion Subsidy The conversion subsidy will be awarded to producers who cease their piglet production following the introduction of new legislation governing the housing of pregnant sows in 2013\. The subsidy must be used to convert piglet production units into units for pigs for slaughter. A minimum investment of DKK 500 per pen place is a prerequisite. The subsidy will be given for a maximum of 8,000 pigs produced for slaughter per converted production facility and per cooperative owner. The subsidy program for converting buildings can accommodate production facilities equivalent to a maximum of 260,000 pigs produced for slaughter annually. The subsidy will be disbursed at DKK 0.075/kg over a 5-year period. The subsidies will be awarded to cooperative members on a first-come, first-served basis.
