An assistant at Cooke Aquaculture Scotland, who works with seawater, has made it to the final round of Lantra Scotland's yearly ALBAS awards. Stuart Lavendar is a contender for the Learner of the Year award, following a promising start to his tenure at Cooke, during which he achieved his Level 2 SVQ in Aquaculture from UHI Shetland, while employed at one of the Yell-based locations. The ALBAS awards acknowledge and applaud the accomplishments of apprentices in Scotland's rural industries, inspire companies to nurture the upcoming talent pool, and highlight the numerous fulfilling career paths available. Stuart, a resident of Mossbank, Shetland, expressed his excitement about attending the award event at the Crieff Hydro Hotel, scheduled for 7 March 2024\. He stated, "Being acknowledged for your hard work and dedication is gratifying and it also propels you to strive for the next level of the SVQs. I am grateful to Cooke for supporting me in achieving my qualifications. Completing my SVQ levels 2 and 3 has enriched my knowledge and comprehension, and is propelling my career in aquaculture forward." Stuart's responsibilities include ensuring the well-being of fish through feeding and health inspections, preparing sites, and maintaining cleanliness. Since joining Cooke in 2020, Stuart has finished all necessary training to earn his Advanced Powerboat qualification. He has also completed additional Lantra courses, including Sea Crane, Capstan, Slinger Signaller, and Forklift training.
