Randers, 23rd May 2013 The previous winter posed significant challenges for builders and contractors due to heavy snowfall and extreme cold weather. Despite these conditions, the construction of Europe's largest cattle slaughterhouse continued unabated, culminating in a festive topping-out ceremony. The completion of the slaughterhouse is expected by mid-March 2014, with a slight delay of just over a month. DC Beef's Division Director expressed his pride and gratitude towards everyone involved in the project: - As I stroll around the site and engage in conversations with some of the builders, I often realize that not many are fully aware of the magnitude of what we are accomplishing here. For some, this might just be another project in a long list of assignments. However, let me clarify, you are indeed contributing to a significant milestone in the Danish slaughterhouse industry. You are part of the team constructing the largest and most advanced cattle slaughterhouse in Northern Europe, and I am quite certain that not many will have the opportunity to be part of such a project again. The last time a new cattle slaughterhouse was constructed in Denmark was in 1972 in Aalborg, which incidentally is also one of ours, shared Lorenz Hansen, Director of DC Beef. The project requires an investment of nearly 700 million Danish kroner Lorenz Hansen further elaborated on what it takes to construct such a massive slaughterhouse: The project involves... • Excavating 50,000 cubic metres of earth • Receiving 30,000 cubic metres of sand, equivalent to 1,500 truckloads • Building a 17,000-square-metre structure under roof • Laying 6 km of sewers • Erecting 2,500 concrete elements in the production section • Erecting 550 concrete elements in the administration section • Installing 15-20 km of drains and pipes And, of course, investing nearly 700 million Danish kroner. However, the members of Danish Crown will hopefully be the proud owners of the largest and most advanced cattle slaughterhouse in this part of Europe. Lorenz Hansen also expressed his gratitude to Danish Crown's members for their forward-thinking support of the project: - I am immensely proud of the faith that the farmers have shown in us, which has made this project feasible. Currently, I am part of a team of highly motivated employees who are eagerly waiting for the opportunity to demonstrate that the decision to build this massive slaughterhouse was the right one. I am excited to show the owners that their investment will result in improved settlement prices for their cattle. The event concluded with the crowd cheering for Danish Crown, Holsted. Additional information for those interested: • Once fully operational, the slaughterhouse will process 4,500 animals per week, which is about half of Denmark's weekly cattle slaughterings. • The facility will have an hourly throughput of 110 animals, double the capacity of DC Beef's existing facilities. • Approximately 10,000 quartered animals will be deboned per week, which equates to 500 animals per day. • 500 tonnes of beef will be minced per week. This is equivalent to 600,000 supermarket trays, or about 60% of all the minced beef consumed in Denmark each week.
