Cermaq introduces new fish welfare policy
Cermaq is committed to ensuring the health, growth, and well-being of its fish. A fish that is well-cared for is healthier, performs more efficiently, and ultimately, is of higher quality. This is crucial for the productivity and sustainability of Cermaq's aquaculture activities. The FishWell report, compiled by a diverse group of scientists, encapsulates the understanding of fish welfare and suggests ways to incorporate this knowledge into production and fish handling procedures. Cermaq has implemented these suggestions to improve fish welfare across its operations. Fish welfare is influenced by various biological and environmental factors. Cermaq persistently works to cater to the needs of the fish, with continuous improvement, research, and innovation being integral to our corporate culture. - A significant shift in monitoring fish welfare will only occur when we transition to individualized farming. This will allow us to monitor and treat each fish individually, rather than the entire population in the pen. This is where iFarm comes into play, says R&D Director Olai Einen. Once fully developed, iFarm can assess the external health and welfare parameters of fish as outlined in FishWell. By sorting and treating each fish individually, the welfare of all fish in the pen will improve and mortality rates will significantly decrease.
