The Ocean Panel's foundation is rooted in top-tier research studies like the Future of Food from the Sea, along with climate and economic assessments. These studies highlight that the aquaculture industry is a key player that can be expanded to provide healthy, climate-friendly food, stimulate economic growth, and reduce greenhouse gas emissions from terrestrial food production. Cermaq's CEO, Geir Molvik, commends the Ocean Panel for their exceptional report, which illustrates the interconnectedness of protection, production, and prosperity. The report suggests that ocean food production could be increased sixfold, with various types of aquaculture playing a significant role. The potential for farming low-trophic species, such as seaweed and kelp, is immense. Species like salmon will be crucial in converting new sea protein into nutritious and tasty food, thereby benefiting both human and planetary health. As a founding member of the UN's Global Compact Ocean Action Platform and an active participant in the SeaBOS partnership, Cermaq supports the Ocean Panel's work. Molvik finds the report's emphasis on the need for political action inspiring. He believes that the time has come to act and implement the well-documented and widely accepted recommendations at a national level. Cermaq anticipates that the Ocean Panel's clear recommendations for increasing sea food production will be implemented nationally. This is particularly significant for Chile, Canada, and Norway, where the heads of state are members of the Ocean Panel. The Ocean Panel also highlights the need for aquaculture to lessen its environmental impact. The recent expansion in fin fish farming necessitates improvements in current practices. This is why Cermaq has introduced iFarm, a unique farming system where each fish has its own health record and receives individual treatment. They have also invested in closed facilities like Certus in Norway and SCCS in Canada, and are exploring a new FlexiFarm system with complete water purification. Cermaq will continue to collaborate with their feed suppliers on developing new, sustainable feed ingredients, a key focus of their research program at the Arctic Research Centre in Finnmark, Norway.
