Blockchain technology adopted by Cermaq for enhanced traceability
Customers are becoming more conscious about the source of their food. Concurrently, there is a growing apprehension about the safety and sustainability of the food production process. Every salmon from Cermaq comes with a detailed profile, providing extensive information about the fish, including its origin, hatch date, freshwater facility it originated from, its size at the time of transfer to seawater, the seawater facility where it was raised, and health and welfare details such as its vaccination history, diet, and harvest date. In collaboration with one of Cermaq's clients, Labeyrie, and IBM Food Trust using IBM cloud blockchain technology, this data is now accessible to consumers in France. "This innovative project emphasizes transparency and traceability throughout our supply chain. It's not only a focus for our company, but also a demand we see from consumers," states Brede Løfsgaard, Sales Director at Cermaq Norway. Labeyrie, a top smoked salmon brand in France, has introduced a new traceability system for two of its Norwegian smoked salmon products. This system, powered by blockchain technology, allows consumers to access comprehensive information about the salmon's production chain by scanning a QR code on the product packaging with a mobile device. This opens a dedicated app that displays the salmon's journey from egg to store. "This initiative helps assure French consumers that the salmon they buy is responsibly and sustainably farmed, healthy, nutritious, and sourced from the pristine waters north of the Arctic Circle," Løfsgaard adds.
