Abbey Hehir and Rebecca Murphy from County Clare emerged as the top recipients of the ABP Farm Safety Award during the 2020 edition of the BT Young Scientist and Technology Exhibition (BTYSTE) thanks to their pioneering project, the Slurry Pit Saver. Representing St John Bosco Community College in Kildysart, the duo garnered acclaim from the judging panel for their inventive solution aimed at mitigating fatal accidents in slurry pits on farms across Ireland. Their invention harnesses solar power and employs infrared sensors to detect the presence of large objects in slurry pits, subsequently issuing alerts to a predefined list of mobile phones through an application. For the sixth year running, the ABP Food Group has backed the Farm Safety category at the exhibition, consistently spotlighting innovative contributions from students nationwide. Farm safety remains a critical concern for ABP, reflecting a broader issue within Ireland. The Health and Safety Authority (HSA) reported that in 2019, the agricultural sector witnessed 18 fatalities due to work-related incidents, representing around 40% of all workplace fatalities in Ireland for that year. Martin Kane, the Managing Director of ABP Ireland, expressed his congratulations to Abbey Hehir, Rebecca Murphy, and Ryely Cantrell for their award-winning project. He emphasized that their project perfectly captures the essence of the award, which is to enhance farm safety and spread awareness about the risks associated with farming accidents. Kane highlighted the ongoing significance of farm safety in Ireland, as underscored by HSA statistics. Through its support of the award, ABP aims to play a part in tackling this issue and promoting the significance of farm safety, especially among the youth.
