Our 2018 ABP Angus Youth Challenge finalists recently took part in the first of two full-day media communication workshops at the Bauer Academy. Bauer Media is a European media group. It owns a host of successful media titles, including Cool FM/Downtown Radio, which is Northern Ireland’s most popular commercial radio network. The finalists were given insider tips and techniques for creating digital content about the supply chain projects they are now work on during this last stage of the competition. They found out about the importance of defining their target audience; using communication channels that are relevant to them and creating messages that resonate with their audience’s needs and motivations. They also heard from the station’s social media guru’s about how they have been able to build Cool FM’s Facebook page to almost 800,000 followers in just a few years. Cool FM presenter and Instagram Influencer Melissa Riddell gave the finalists an insight into how she got to where she is today. Being from a beef farming background herself, she spoke honestly about dreaming of working in the media. Not knowing anyone in the industry, the Cool Academy and internship route helped her land her role with Cool FM which she now combines very successfully with an Instagram business that has a following of 24.5K. Exercises on developing news perspectives and a behind the scenes tour of the studios were included in this jam-packed programme. The day culminated in each team getting to record an audio file for their communications campaign. With just five months to go until the 2018 Finalists complete the last stage of their 18-month journey, this is now the time to pull out all the stops on their assignments and make that lasting impression before the overall winner is decided.
