A groundbreaking technology for treating wastewater in a carbon-neutral and energy-positive manner, developed by NVP Energy and originating from research at NUI Galway, has been adopted by ABP Food Group and is now being implemented in food and beverage facilities worldwide. ABP, a company committed to sustainability, recognized the potential of NVP Energy's innovative Low Temperature Anaerobic Digestion technology and initiated a pilot project at its Lurgan site. This project aimed to demonstrate the commercial viability of converting waste into methane gas in an energy-positive manner. John Durkan, ABP's sustainability manager, supervised the installation of NVP Energy's pioneering sludge-free wastewater treatment plant. He reported that the plant operated efficiently from the start, highlighting NVP Energy's extensive expertise in anaerobic digestion technology. This expertise was a key factor in ABP's decision to collaborate with NVP Energy on the full-scale Lurgan system. Durkan emphasized, "ABP is constantly seeking innovative, technology-driven solutions to challenges, making this project an ideal fit. It's a sustainable, carbon-neutral, odor-free, and cutting-edge technology that offers low treatment costs, eliminates sludge production, and ensures clean wastewater discharge. Additionally, it produces high-quality methane gas for onsite use." He expressed pride in supporting an Irish technology that has emerged from a leading university, noting NVP Energy's success in extending its technology to other major food and beverage companies. The Lurgan treatment plant processes all the site's wastewater, converting it into biogas for heating and electricity, covering 40% of ABP Foods' onsite gas needs. Michael Murray, managing director of NVP Energy, expressed enthusiasm about collaborating with ABP Food Group, highlighting the synergy between NVP's technology and ABP's commitment to efficiency. Murray noted the mutual understanding and shared expertise between the two companies, which facilitated a successful partnership and project outcome. This success has propelled NVP Energy forward and provided ABP Foods with significant energy and cost savings. As a result of its expanding project portfolio, NVP Energy has created 10 new full-time positions. The company's technology is now being used in various sectors, including dairy processing, brewing, malting, and municipal services. In 2017, ABP Food Group was the first company worldwide to achieve triple certification from the Carbon Trust for the third consecutive time, underscoring its commitment to environmental sustainability. This certification, a leading global standard, confirms an organization's effective management of energy consumption, CO2 emissions, water use, and waste production. The Carbon Trust has collaborated with ABP for over six years, recognizing the company's dedication to achieving sustainability excellence.
