ABP has announced that its objectives for reducing greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions have received official validation from the Science Based Targets Initiative (SBTi). This endorsement underscores the company's dedication to aligning its environmental sustainability efforts with the international climate objectives established by the 2015 Paris Agreement. ABP's newly set goals encompass the reduction of GHG emissions from both its direct operations (scope 1 and 2 emissions) and its extended supply chain (scope 3 emissions). The company has pledged to lower its direct emissions (scope 1 and 2) by 27% by the year 2030, using 2016 as the baseline year. Since the launch of its sustainability initiative in 2008, ABP has already achieved a 28% reduction in emissions across its activities. Furthermore, ABP aims to achieve a 17% reduction in indirect emissions (scope 3) originating from its supply chain by 2030\. The SBTi represents a partnership among CDP, the United Nations Global Compact, the World Resources Institute (WRI), and the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF). This initiative leverages the most current climate science to establish and evaluate science-based target setting practices, offering independent assessments of corporate targets against its stringent criteria. Among the pioneering sustainability projects already in progress at ABP are: ● A collaborative dairy beef genetic research program with Teagasc and The Irish Cattle Breeding Federation, unveiled last month, which has shown potential emission reductions of up to 28% in dairy beef herds. ● The inauguration of the world's first certified carbon-neutral slaughterhouse in Ellesmere in 2015, which utilizes waste from meat processing combined with used cooking oil to meet the site's energy needs. ● Through its renewable energy division, Olleco, ABP has supported Arla’s Aylesbury milk processing plant in becoming the world’s first carbon net zero milk processing facility. Olleco's anaerobic digestion facility next to the site processes dairy waste into heat, power, and bio-methane for the national grid, as well as bio-fertilizer for agriculture, generating enough sustainable energy to power around 12,000 homes. ● Implementation of heat recovery initiatives at several processing locations, including ABP Cahir, ABP Wessex, and C&D Esbjerg, which have effectively reduced reliance on fossil fuels by repurposing waste heat from various processes. Martin Kane, Managing Director of ABP Ireland, expressed his enthusiasm about the validation, stating: “Receiving validation from the SBTi for our emission reduction targets marks a significant milestone in ABP’s journey towards environmental sustainability. It clearly outlines the path we must follow to contribute to global emission reduction efforts. Significant strides have been made since we first embarked on our sustainability strategy in 2008, and we are eager to continue this momentum as we advance towards 2030 and beyond.”
