Students from Down High School in Downpatrick, Friends’ School in Lisburn, St. Killian’s College in Carnlough, and St. Louis Grammar in Ballymena had the opportunity to explore the inner workings of Northern Ireland’s premier commercial radio broadcaster. These students, all involved in the ABP Angus Youth Challenge, a competitive agricultural skills development initiative for Year 11 students organized by ABP in partnership with Certified Irish Angus, gained invaluable insights into professional communication. Their excursion to the headquarters of Cool FM, Downtown Radio, and Downtown Country was a reward for advancing to the final round of the ABP Angus Youth Challenge. Throughout the final phase of this year-long program, the teams from the four schools are tasked with developing projects that advocate for and improve the sustainable production of Angus beef in Northern Ireland, in addition to raising a small group of Angus cross calves until they reach maturity. The projects undertaken by the students include topics such as Carbon Capture through Science; Promoting Healthy Agriculture; Planning for Succession; and Implementing Technology to Enhance Beef Production Efficiency. During their visit, the students collaborated with Cool FM and Downtown presenters to craft engaging narratives for their projects and learned the significance of audience engagement. They also received valuable advice from some of the radio station’s most influential social media personalities. The workshop concluded with the students producing a radio advertisement and a video clip to further publicize their project initiatives. Liam McCarthy from ABP commented on the significance of the workshop, stating, “This media workshop is designed to provide our ABP Angus Youth participants with the necessary skills to serve as effective young representatives for our sector, while also guiding them on how to use social media in an effective and responsible manner.” The ABP Angus Youth Challenge opens its doors for submissions every September. Teachers, guardians, and club leaders interested in participating or learning more about the program are encouraged to visit the official website at https://abpangusyouthchallenge.com/teachers for more information.
